Not so long ago, a watch with a 40mm case seemed large. Today, such size for a watch case is considered smaller than the average. Oversized cases are a current trend in the watch market. Right now men wear watches the size of pocket ones, and women wear timepieces the size men used to wear. Some companies even made oversized watches their signature. For instance, Officine Panerai, an Italian brand, is known mostly for oversized dials. Watches with large cases have always been one of the specialties of the British-based Graham London brand. The company has four collections of such timepieces – Chronofighter Oversize, Chronofighter Oversize Diver, Chronofighter Oversize GMT, and Chronofighter Oversize Titanium.
As one can guess, the Graham Chronofighter Oversize Diver makes part of the collection bearing the same name. Naturally, the watch has a large 47mm case. It was constructed using hi-tech materials – stainless steel with PVD treatment giving it a peculiar matte black finish. The oversized case is not just a nod to the trend – it also makes time telling much easier. The watch features a unidirectional rotating bezel with marker tabs that you can be set to indicate elapsed time underwater.
Water-resistant to 300 m, the Graham Chronofighter Oversize Diver has a helium release valve. This smart device equalizes the pressure that builds up in the case during a saturation dive. A lever at the left side of the case is used to start and stop the chronograph, while a push button next to it – to reset the chronograph function.
The timepiece comes with a sporty rubber strap, matching the bold case.

The cardinal rule of success is “Be different”. Chronoswiss seems to know well the formula of success. Twenty years ago, when the quartz revolution overtook the watch market and only a small part of watch manufacturers remained loyal to mechanical watches, Gerd R. Lang acted in a way that seemed quite strange back then. He founded a company devoted to producing exclusively mechanical timepieces, ChronoSwiss. The branding decision of Mr. Lang was extremely wise. When the initial popularity of quartz watches wore off a little, it turned out that craftsmanship and tradition still had a place with the consumer. Nowadays ChronoSwiss watches, each component of which is produced in Switzerland and hand-finished, have a base of loyal customers.
The ChronoSwiss Regulateur Moonphase is one of the 7000 watches the company produces each year. The design of the watch is close to minimalistic. In fact, this minimalism reflects the philosophy of the company – strict adherence to function, nothing extra. The only decorative detail is the carved bezel which resembles a ribbed tuna can. Guided by the philosophy of minimalism, the brand decided that the ChronoSwiss Regulateur Moonphase does not need to be water-resistant – a dress watch will hardly be worn while swimming.
The dial of the watch features classic-style large Roman numerals. The seconds are displayed in a sub-dial at 9 o’clock. This idea was inspired by astronomical observatory clocks, where the hour hand never stays in the way of reading the seconds. The 12-hour register sub-dial is positioned at 12 o’clock, while the moon phase indicator in gold and blue is on the opposite side of the dial.
Coming on a hand-sewn crocodile strap, the ChronoSwiss Regulateur Moonphase makes an elegant companion.

Watchmaking companies have long been attracted to ocean racing. First of all, like every sport, it needs timekeeping, and, perhaps, most important of all, the noble sport of boat-sailing is quite flattering to be associated with. Each brand has its own ties to sailing. The Swiss manufacturer Audemars Piguet chose to sponsor the Alinghi sailing team, which participated in the American Cup. The Italian-based Officine Panerai organizes annual international challenges for vintage boats.
Hublot refused to be like everyone else. Instead of sponsoring a sailing event, the brand created a limited edition watch in the Luna Rossa team’s colours and materials – the Hublot Luna Rossa Chronograph. The partnership with Luna Rossa came quite natural to Hublot. The company’s name, Hublot, means “porthole” in French, so the brand was destined to pursue this connection with the sea in one way or another from the very start.
Trying to create the feeling of the sailing spirit, Hublot used the same materials as designated for boat construction: carbon, titanium, ceramics, rubber and Kevlar. The materials were assembled together, producing an exclusive timepiece.
The Hublot Luna Rossa Chronograph bears the inscription “Luna Rossa” on its signature red line on the dial, as well as inside the strap made from natural rubber. The model has a black checkered dial with three sub-dials, whose timekeeping function is powered by an automatic winding movement developed together with La Joux-Perret. The case in brushed and polished black ceramic is water-resistant to 100 m which means that it won’t be damaged while swimming.
Each exquisitely detailed timepiece is a numbered, limited edition. Overall, there were produced 1000 watches.

Just like people, companies can have friendly relationships. This is true for Girard-Perregaux and BMW. There is nothing surprising in close ties between the watch and car manufacturers – both cars and watches have a lot in common in terms of innovation, engineering, design, high precision and performance.
Friendship is all about giving and taking. Both companies seem to be fully aware of this unspoken rule. In 2006, BMW designed a car, reflecting the philosophy of Girard-Perregaux luxury products, the BMW Individual 760Li. A few years later, the watchmaking brand returned the favor. Girard-Perregaux became partner of the BMW Oracle Racing team, participating in the America’s Cup sailing regatta challenge. The company even created a watch especially for this occasion – the Girard-Perregaux Laureato BMW Oracle Racing Tourbillon.
Those who want the watch have to act quickly – as it is usual for luxury goods, the BMW Oracle Racing Tourbillon is issued in a limited edition of 32 pieces. The movement of the timepiece was designed specifically for the challenge. For instance, the dial features four hands instead of the usual three – one hand indicates the ten minutes interval before the start of the yacht races. Looking at the counter at 1 o’clock, one can calculate how much time is left before the end of the races. The mechanism of the watch can be admired through an aperture on the dial.
The chronograph of the Girard-Perregaux Laureato BMW Oracle Racing Tourbillon is extremely easy to operate – just one push of the push-piece at 3 o’clock is enough to set all its functions. The crown at 4 o’clock is screwed down securely to protect the inside of the case from water.

There is a simple way to increase demand – just to limit distribution of a highly desired object. True luxury lies in “one of a kind” and “limited edition”. It is not enough to create a good product – it should be unique and individual.
Marketing experts of Bvlgari seem to know this secret. In 2005, the company launched the Bvlgari Carbongold Quartz Chrono, available only in nine stores of the brand. The timepiece comes in 27 versions, with the name of one of 27 cities written across its dial. The number “27” is not accidentally chosen – it symbolizes 27 cities where BVLGARI has stores.
Each version of the watch is produced in a limited edition of 999 pieces. The timepieces are individually marked with a number, so they are of interest to collectors.
What all the versions of the timepiece share is the carbon fiber case. Other things can vary – some parts of the Bvlgari Carbongold Quartz Chrono can be made from yellow, pink or white gold.
Boasting full chronograph functions, the black matte dial of the watch features three additional counters and a date display window at 4 o’clock. The baton markers and Arabic numerals are hand-applied, while the hour and minute hands are coated with a luminescent substance.
The signature “BVLGARI” is engraved on the bezel of the timepiece, like on every watch produced by the brand. The round carbon fibre case is paired with a calf leather strap featuring a carbon buckle.
